'Sigh' November, 2009
Crownest Pass Public Art Gallery
Recently I heard a magnificent, live piano performance of Franz Liszt’s “Un Sospiro”. The title is Italian for ‘breath from within’ or ‘sigh’. I thought, if I could just paint that—.
I had never given the word much thought before that performance. A sigh potentially condenses the significance of a moment into a singular sound – yet, it’s more than a sound; it’s sort of a breathed feeling, an emotion exhaled. We sigh for a thousand reasons. The simple universality of it moved me to the point that I wanted to name a show after Liszt’s piece. Much of what I paint is the stuff of sighing: beauty, joy, yearning, wonder, letting go. Painting enables me to hold something still long enough to look deeply. May it be the same for you as you bring un sospiro along side mine.
