in good company
(20x24 acrylic on canvas)
The idea of depicting journey with an iconic vessel is not new. In this case, the journey is about my family – my parents, five brothers, me. My Dutch immigrant parents came to North America by boat as part of the global wave of people in search of promise in the years following World War II. This idea of a boat in water is compelling for many reasons, not the least of which is the fascinating ways humankind has devised ways to maneuver in it, above it, through it. In recent years my family journeys through unchartered waters: cancer and death. But we don’t journey alone. Instead we find ourselves in the company of those who keep us afloat through their expressions of love and kindness. A small, vulnerable vessel buoyed up by the greater story of community.
